Let's hope people aren't assholes flaunting their 'love' and rubbing their kissing and groping with their loves in while out in public. Lord knows they are that way each year. Don't scurry around making those single people feel like crap, Valentines Day's a huge day when people break up to ya know. Plus you're just looking like jerks when you put on a show of what you 'have' like you're better than the others.
So for all you materialistic saps that think Valentines Day is something special and give in to the holiday only because of tradition and not out of love, just remember.
I'm never really fond of Valentines Day either, mainly because those lovesick couples don't know how to act respectively in public. Like the other day, there was this one couple that were a bit ditzy (they weren't drunk, stoned or anything like that mind you. ) for no reason at all and they didn't seem to see two feet in front of 'em.
The ones I'm targeting are the ones humping in the toy isles, grinding on the sidewalks, and making scenes in public or taunting other people.
I am slamming on the out and out antagonistic people who pretty much have intercourse in public around people who either have no one or don't wanna/need to ever see it. I've nothing against kissing, touching modestly, anything like that, but some people....
i like V-day its one of the only Holidays that I can participate in aside from Christmas that doesn't involve food.
my mom always gets me something special for this day. this year for Valentines I get the season 1 DVD of MLP FIM. & alot of Hospital stuff too for my Surgery at the end of the month. thats what im getting for valentines day I get to get stuff for the hospital trip.
& valentines is to celebrate the miracle of Love. BTW St. Valentine's Day began as a liturgical celebration of one or more early Christian saints named Valentinus. The most popular martyrology associated with Saint Valentine was that he was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and for ministering to Christians, who were persecuted under the Roman Empire; during his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution he wrote "from your Valentine" as a farewell to her. he was executed on Feb 14th.
Valentines day is also about showing how much you love some one. its also kind of a giving holiday too. Its Halloween i don't like.
I know what it's about, but I don't like how it torments single people or how it makes love into a material object. Valentines Day is used to 'buy' love from people most often and is actually just a cheapened and abused form of real love. Real love shouldn't need any of those bought things or cheap chocolates to last. Valentines Day makes love into a profit not a blessing.
Showing people how much I love them should be done everyday or on anniversaries, not a day everyone else tells me to do it. It's just not right to me to only do it on a single day because it's a holiday.
Also lemme just add this in. Celebrated on February 15, Lupercalia (known as the “festival of sexual license”) was held by the ancient Romans in honor of Lupercus, god of fertility and husbandry, protector of herds and crops, and a mighty hunter—especially of wolves. The Romans believed that Lupercus would protect Rome from roving bands of wolves, which devoured livestock and people. Assisted by Vestal Virgins, the Luperci (male priests) conducted purification rites by sacrificing goats and a dog in the Lupercal cave on Palatine Hill, where the Romans believed the twins Romulus and Remus had been sheltered and nursed by a she-wolf before they eventually founded Rome. Clothed in loincloths made from sacrificed goats and smeared in their blood, the Luperci would run about Rome, striking women with februa, thongs made from skins of the sacrificed goats. The Luperci believed that the floggings purified women and guaranteed their fertility and ease of childbirth. February derives from februa or “means of purification.” To the Romans, February was also sacred to Juno Februata, the goddess of febris (“fever”) of love, and of women and marriage. On February 14, billets (small pieces of paper, each of which had the name of a teen-aged girl written on it) were put into a container. Teen-aged boys would then choose one billet at random. The boy and the girl whose name was drawn would become a “couple,” joining in erotic games at feasts and parties celebrated throughout Rome. After the festival, they would remain sexual partners for the rest of the year. This custom was observed in the Roman Empire for centuries.
In A.D. 494, Pope Gelasius renamed the festival of Juno Februata as the “Feast of the Purification of the Virgin Mary.” The date of its observance was later changed from February 14 to February 2, then changed back to the 14. It is also known as Candlemas, the Presentation of the Lord, the Purification of the Blessed Virgin and the Feast of the Presentation of Christ in the Temple. After Constantine had made the Roman church’s brand of Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire (A.D. 325), church leaders wanted to do away with the pagan festivals of the people. Lupercalia was high on their list. But the Roman citizens thought otherwise. It was not until A.D. 496 that the church at Rome was able to do anything about Lupercalia. Powerless to get rid of it, Pope Gelasius instead changed it from February 15 to the 14th and called it St. Valentine’s Day. It was named after one of that church’s saints, who, in A.D. 270, was executed by the emperor for his beliefs.
Well In my opinion I think every Holiday especially Chrstmas which is about the Birth of our king & savior is making a profit out of something but commercialism & material posetions turned that love & peace into selfish greed of material posetions. on Chrstmas. its not about the presents its about the love. but some people don't see that I never Buy a valnetines for any of my loved ones I always draw a picture for them. make them something.
Halloween is a dangerous Holiday. its also done for profit & money. on candy that lunatics out here poison & try to pass off to kids . our mom had to check our candy every year when we were kids. now we don't even go out on halloween. I always tell om to come home early on that night because I don't like being home alone on halloween. Not scared of it . im just scared of the crazy loons that creep on that night. people get hurt & its just terrible.
while Christmas Thanksgiving Easter Valentines have a meaning to them. There is no point in my opinion for Halloween.
its the only Holiday that we don't celebrate in our family.
& wow I didn't know that about the roman empire. but your right about one thing . Love should be celebrated everyday not just for one day.
I pretty much dislike almost every holiday, to be honest. One thing I don't like about Valentine's Day is that people are obsessed with getting shit. Like, "Oh, I hope my boyfriend buys me this and that". I hate the greediness in human nature, it really irks me. It's why I hate Christmas because it seems like the only thing that people care about is receiving materialistic items.
Oddly enough the reason I like Christmas is not because of gifts -I didn't get NOTHING last year but what my online friends made me- but because of the human kindness and charity when people truly need it. Perhaps it's where I live, but it just seems less greedy. Every time the car broke down or even when dad's truck caught on fire last year over five different people stopped, helped, and even semis and crap pulled over to help. It's just not...like other places.
Valentine's day in general I hate because of social pressures. I've had friends get pressured into buying me roses and shit when I was not wanting it at all. I absolutely hated that. Seeing people try to push each other's friends together "buy her this!" and crap. >.< I watched it happen with other friends too, really wrong imho.
Lol, imo Valentines Day is pointless. Why should you wait one day of the year to show someone you really love and care about them when you should be doing that all the time? Same goes with some of the other "holidays". It's just a way for business to make more money...
I don't mind Christmas and Halloween, those are more focused on fun, cheer, and giving. While yes those are still geared at businesses making money, a lot of businesses donate, some people share fundraisers and kids have lots of candy and mischief, it's a sort of mixed bag of positive with some negatives attached.
Valentines Day is just using something so amazing and yet worth a lifetime to find and twisting it into a profit. It's essentially to me the same as taking Gall fluid from a bear and keeping it alive painfully and while suffering. Each year thousands of people hope for love, thousands spend that 'happy day' getting their heart shattered, thousands kill themselves, and thousands think that Valentines Day is the only day they have a chance at being loved. It's like dangling a toy in front of a child and then pulling it away while saying they're not good enough, they're not smart enough, they aren't fit enough, etc. It's just really a cruel day. It's not directed to fun or happiness, it's more like a representation of what they want people to believe that love is. It's like a huge lie to innocent and naive people.
